A Grand Avenue Revival:
Massachusetts Avenue Landscape History & Design Guide
by Deborah Shapley
Published by Restore Mass Ave, 2014
Why This Book
This book was created to show how the landscape of Embassy Row, the two miles of Massachusetts Ave NW in Washington, came about. It’s noble streetscape of double rows of trees and architecture make it a Grand Avenue - possibly the last of this type in a major US city. Restore Mass Ave won a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to document this landscape and guide its restoration (See Trees.) Historic preservation rules protected the architecture,, but not the landscape.
Since publication in 2014, Grand Avenue Revival has been used by owners of properties and other stakeholders to choose trees and landscape that will sustain this heritage landmark in the 21st century. The DC Historic Preservation Office recommends it on its website. The book is a work of history and tool for advocacy tool that helps this busy commuter route be a model in the 21st century.
